What it Romon? Understanding Romon Mikrotik

Romon stands for Router Management Overlay Network which is a new feature from version RouterOS Mikrotik at 6.28. Romon this feature may be unfamiliar to you, because it is only available in RouterOS and WinBox new version. Well, to find out more about what it Romon Mikrotik, let’s discuss in this article.

Understanding Romon

What it Romon? Romon (Router Management Overlay Network) is a proprietary protocol Mikrotik (protocol is only supported on Mikrotik), which can make a connection layer2 safe (secure) to the device either through connections MikroTik “Physical” (Ethernet) or Layer 2 Tunnel. In addition, Romon also has the following features:
  • Discovery and management MikroTik devices via Ping, SSH, Winbox (version 3.0.rc.9 upwards).
  • Able to perform discovery (search) MikroTik devices that enable Romon that have passed through multiple hops.
So with this Romon we can detect devices on WinBox although Mikrotik Mikrotik devices are located in different network segment and pass through several other routers (multiple hops). This is different to feature WinBox Mikrotik usual, which can only detect devices that are Mikrotik one network only.

How to Switch Romon

Communication is based on parameters Romon Romon ID derived from the MAC address of the router. Devices that enable Romon will make a discovery of MAC Address Peer and also the data forwarding protocol are independent .
This time we will try simple implementation of this feature to perform remote router ( Romon Enabled ) different network using winbox. Especially for these features as we have mentioned above, we will useWinbox 3.0.rc.9 version that supports features Romon.
Romon features found in menu Tools → Romon . To activate it we live check the option ‘ Enabled ‘. Then we set the parameter ‘ Secrets ‘ at Romon Settings . This parameter serves as authentication for connection MikroTik devices connected. For example, this time we fill ‘ Secrets ‘ to 12345 . In accordance topology of the example above case, this configuration is also performed on all three routers.

If we look at Romon Settings are parameter ID . This ID is the MAC address of the router used for communications devices. We can determine these parameters by any MAC addresses contained on the router interface, but if we do not fill by default will use the MAC address of the first router.

Furthermore, after three routers have to set configuration as above, we will try to do different remote network devices by using Winbox.

As above topology that will perform remote client currently on the network We can add the parameter ‘ Connect To ‘ in winbox the gateway from the client. Well, to use a feature Romon, we select the command button in winbox ie Connect TO Romon . Once successfully connected winbox then the display appears as follows.

Seen in winbox are Romon Agent and also in tab Romon Neighbors are devices that are connected with Romon MikroTik. If without using Romon when we want to do different remote network devices even passing through several hops it will not appear on the tab in winbox neighbors.
To perform remote we just select one of the devices on the list we want to manage and click on the ‘ Connect‘.PortsBy default the entire active interfaces on the router to Romon. But here we can activate whichever enabled interface Romon features. In addition we can manually specify the value of ‘ Cost ‘ and parameter ‘ Secret ‘ at the interface.

With the command ‘ Discovery ‘ contained in Romon Settings , we can check which devices are connected and actively using Romon. There is some information from devices such as Romon ID (Address) , the value of Cost , Total Hops , Identity

We can monitor both the MikroTik devices are active and connected properly. To perform these checks could use the Ping Romon .
